What sporting events can you watch live in-flight? Sport 24 looks ahead to 2014
December is the time of year when many of us reflect back on the year that is ending and look ahead to the year about to begin. We at @Altitude decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to reach out to our friends at IMG Media Ltd and speak to them about the exciting things happening in-flight with Sport24, the world’s first live global sports channel for the Airline and Ship at Sea industries. They were gracious enough to let us ask them a few questions, so we can share that information with you!
@A: Sport 24 live sport programming has been available in flight on a number of airlines for a while now, but for those passengers just becoming aware of the service, when was Sport launched in-flight, and what was the first sporting event broadcast?
S24: IMG Media Ltd launched Sport 24 at 12 noon on 1st February 2012. That evening Sport 24 broadcast the first ever live sports event on board Gulf Air, a Barclays Premier League match; Everton v Manchester City.
@A: Sport 24 has some great live programming available to passengers in-flight. What are the major sporting events featured on Sport 24?
S24: From the start of Sport 24 we wanted to ensure that it broadcast only premium live sports events, so that passenger found themselves watching the best sport from around the world. So in 2012 we began by broadcasting the Barclays Premier League, the Bundesliga, 3 of the Grand Slam tennis tournaments including the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon, as well as all four Golf Majors; The Open Championship, US Open, the Augusta and the PGA Championship. Each race of the Formula 1™ season was shown live and on top of that there was 127 hours of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
In 2013 we added events such as the ATP World Tour Masters 1000s, US Open Tennis, European Tour Golf, MotoGP and Euroleague Basketball.
@A: That’s quite an impressive list of premium sporting events. Do you have any new exciting events that passengers can look forward to watching live in-flight in 2014?
S24: There’s a great line up in 2014. As well as the above, there’s the Sochi Winter Olympic Games and the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2014. Passengers will be able to watch all of the action from their seats as they travel, live!
@A: Both the Sochi Winter Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup 2014? That’s a lot of live sport to be able to watch in-flight! For those of us that will have to be travelling during these events, what airlines currently offer Sport 24 in-flight?
S24: We’re pleased to say that currently broadcasting Sport 24 are Etihad Airways, Emirates, Garuda Airlines, Lufthansa, and Turkish Airlines. Sport 24 will be available on their long haul flights.
@A: So if a passenger knows that they will be travelling on one of these airlines that offer Sport 24, how can they find out what sporting events will be broadcast during their flight?
S24: Passengers can get instant access to the Sport 24 schedule by logging on to the Sport 24 website, and they can check out the weekly newsletters that highlight the live events that are put up on the Sport 24 Facebook and Twitter pages.
@A: We can confirm that those are very informative newsletters. We also share them each week here on the @Altitude web site too. Are there any new airlines launching Sport 24 in 2014 that you can share with us?
S24: We hope to have many more major airlines in the near future that will be broadcasting live sport to passengers all around the world, soon!
We hope to see more airlines broadcasting Sport 24 in the near future too! Thanks to Sport 24 for taking the time to answer our questions. Hopefully @Altitude will be in-flight to experience first-hand some of this great live programming available in 2014. And you know that if we are, we’ll be sharing the experience with everybody in the @Altitude community!
