These are just some of the topics I spoke with Tarek Abdel-Halim, United Airlines’ managing director of cabin systems, about during the recent Future Travel Experience conference.
Gogo gets FCC approval for faster Wi-Fi on aircraft
Gogo, the Itasca-based provider of Wi-Fi service on aircraft, said Thursday it cleared a “major hurdle” when it received federal approval for its new, faster Internet connection technology.
The service called 2Ku is several times faster than existing technology and is satellite-based so it offers connections over water.

Virgin America completes fleet-wide rollout of ATG-4 connectivity service
Virgin America has become the first airline to offer Gogo’s ATG-4 Wi-Fi service across its entire fleet of 53 Airbus A320 Family aircraft. ATG-4 offers peak connection speeds of 9.8 Mbps compared to the 3.1 Mbps offered by the first generation onboard Wi-Fi service that was previously available.
