In-Flight on Garuda Indonesia’s Jakarta-Tokyo Route

By:  @Altitude_Alex

Looking for flight options with connectivity to Southeast Asia?  Consider Garuda Indonesia, with routes to Jakarta (CGK) from Amsterdam (AMS), Jeddah (JED), and Tokyo (NRT), as well as Denpasar (DPS) on their new B777-300ERs.  They’ve also got additional routes with connectivity on their A330s.

GA 884 - seatback cardI had the opportunity to experience Garuda Indonesia’s connectivity offering recently on board flights GA 885 (NRT-CGK) and GA 884 (CGK-NRT).  August 9th I departed from Tokyo on the 7 ½ hour flight bound for Jakarta. With my keen eye for in-flight connectivity marketing, I was happy to see their WiFi logo prominently displayed at the front of each cabin of the B777-300ER.  In the seat back pocket, I found a full page on Wi-Fi inside the back cover of “Stars” – their entertainment guide – as well as a separate information card with instructions for using the service.

In case you miss any of the visual cues, availability of Wi-Fi is included in the pre-take off PA announcement and again when the service turns on after reaching the altitude of 10,000 feet, both in 3 languages!

Navigating the purchase process is quite easy, with the portal optimized for both laptops and smartphones. You can choose 1-hour or 24-hour pricing options, or select from of lengthy list of roaming partners. The service is free to passengers travelling the first class cabin. Of course I tested out the system using all of my devices – laptop, tablet, and smartphone – and spent quite a bit of time tweeting and posting pictures of my flights to Facebook and Instagram! Thanks to @AirlineFlyer for keeping me company on Twitter during GA 885!

GA 884 - Sport 24In addition to WiFi, Garuda’s connectivity offering includes 8 channels of live television, which can be viewed via the seatback monitor. The lineup is comprised of 7 news channels and Sport 24, the global sports channel. On my return flight to Tokyo (GA 884), I was lucky enough to catch coverage of the ATP World Tour live from Cincinnati, including the second set of Raonic vs. Fognini followed by Djokovic vs. Robredo.

Thanks to Garuda Indonesia for excellent care provided by their cabin crew. With the WiFi, live television, and exceptional service, my flights with Garuda Indonesia were a great experience!

Good luck from the @Altitude community to Garuda Indonesia on their new route with in-flight connectivity, Jakarta (CGK) to London Gatwick (LGW), launching in September!
